ACH vs wire: timing, limits, finality.
How ACH and Fedwire differ on timing, limits and reversals, from Fed and Nacha sources.
- ACH moves batched entries in scheduled windows; a Fedwire transfer settles one payment at a time.
- Same Day ACH settles at 1:00, 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. ET; $1 million per payment.
- A Fedwire credit is final when made; ACH entries can still be returned or reversed.

Nacha says ACH is unusual in both pushing and pulling funds.
| Point | ACH credit | ACH debit |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | Pushed from the Originator to the Receiver | Pulled from the Receiver to the Originator |
| Common example | Payroll direct deposit | Insurance premium payment |
| Offset entry | Debits the Originator's account | Credits the Originator's account |
| Return-rate levels | Do not apply to returned credits | 0.5%, 3.0% and 15.0% levels apply |
| From September 18, 2026 | Non-Same Day credits available by 9:00 a.m. local | Not applicable |
